JaySmitt Labs
The short version: Your chip collection lives on your phone. If you choose to join Friends, ChipTrail keeps a backup of your collection on our server so you can get it back on a new phone, and shares only the profile details you mark Friends or Global. We use your location on your phone to check you in at dealerships; we never sell your information or use it to track you. The one outside service that collects data about you is Google AdMob, which plays the optional videos you can watch for a free point.
This privacy policy applies to the ChipTrail app for mobile devices (iOS and Android), together with any related services operated by JaySmitt Labs (collectively, the "Application"). JaySmitt Labs is hereby referred to as the "Service Provider".
Until you join Friends, everything you put into ChipTrail stays on your own device: the chips you log and their photos, colours, dates and notes; your check-in history; your points and badges; and your profile. It is stored with the operating system's standard app storage and deleting the Application deletes it.
Reading the words on a chip photo (the Seek feature) happens entirely on your device. The photo is not uploaded to do this.
Friends, Ranks and Backup are optional. If you join, you pick a rider name and ChipTrail creates an account on our server with:
If you choose Sign in with Apple (or Sign in with Google, where offered) to keep your rider safe, we store only the permanent, app-specific account number Apple or Google gives us, so that you can find your rider again on a new phone. ChipTrail does not ask Apple or Google for your name or email address.
Every line of your profile — profile picture, name, city, state, country, the language you speak, email, phone, bike, bio and photos — has its own setting: Private, Friends or Global. Anything marked Friends or Global is sent to our server and shown to the riders you have added as friends. Anything marked Private is not shared with anyone. Your friends also see your chip, state and badge counts, your badges and the title you wear.
Online now. While ChipTrail is open, your phone lets our server know about once a minute, so your friends see a small green dot by your name when you have used the app in the last couple of minutes. Only your friends see it; the server keeps just the time you were last seen.
Chips by Four with riders you don't know. If you tap Find a rider in Chips by Four, our server pairs you with another rider who is looking for a game at the same time. That rider sees your rider name, and your profile picture only if you have marked it Global; nothing marked Friends or Private is ever shown to them. They can ask you for another game or send you a friend request, which you can turn down. You can block a rider from the end of a game: our server then keeps a note of the block so the two of you are never matched again and they cannot ask you for a game or to be friends. While you are looking for a game, the server keeps only a note that you are waiting, which is removed within two minutes of you stopping. During one of these games the server also notes when each phone last looked at the game, so it can keep the 30-second move timer and tell when a player has left.
Ranks. To place you on the leaderboards, your phone sends the list of dealerships you have a chip from and the dealerships you have checked in at (as dealership numbers from ChipTrail's own list, not map positions). Global and dealership leaderboards show your rider name and your counts to everyone who has joined. Friends leaderboards show them to your friends.
Your friend code is also your invite code. When a rider who is new to ChipTrail joins with your code, you become friends and you earn 25 points. So that each new rider is only counted once, the app sends our server a scrambled phone tag (made from a random tag the app keeps on the phone, or on Android from the phone's Android ID). It cannot be turned back into anything about you or your phone, is used only to check whether a phone has used ChipTrail before, and is never shown to anyone. The Google Play link on a profile card carries the inviter's friend code so the app can fill it in for the new rider.
Once you have joined Friends, ChipTrail automatically keeps a backup of your collection on our server so you can bring it back on a new phone. The backup contains everything on the phone: your chips and their notes, your chip and profile photos, your check-in history (including where your phone said it was when you checked in), your points, badges and title, and your whole profile — including the lines you marked Private. Only you can ever get your backup back; it is never shown to friends or other riders. Each new backup replaces the last one, and photos you delete are removed from it.
ChipTrail asks to use your location only while you are using the app. It is used on your phone to check you in when you are within about 100 feet of a dealership, to show where you are on the trail map, and to plan a trip from where you are. Your location is not tracked in the background and is not sent to us, except that each check-in record (the dealership, the day and time, and where your phone said it was) is included in your backup if you have joined Friends.
ChipTrail uses the camera, or a photo you choose from your library, to picture your chips, your rides and yourself. Photos stay on your phone unless you have joined Friends, in which case they are included in your backup, and your profile picture and profile photos are shown to friends if their settings allow it (a picture marked Global is also shown to riders you play in Chips by Four). Your profile picture is also shown next to your name on your friends' lists and in Chips by Four games.
To draw the map, find places you type and draw the road for a trip, ChipTrail uses mapping services. On iPhone these are Apple's own Maps services. On Android the map is drawn from OpenStreetMap data, and place search and routes come from Geoapify. These services receive what they need to answer — the area of the map being shown, the words you type into the trip box, and the start and end points of a route — and handle it under their own policies. When you send a trip to Apple Maps or Google Maps, that app takes over from there.
Market offers one optional video a day that you can watch for a free point. These videos are supplied by Google AdMob; ChipTrail shows no other ads and nothing ever interrupts you. ChipTrail asks Google for non-personalised ads only. To serve and measure the videos, Google still collects and receives:
This information is collected by Google and handled under Google's privacy policy for partner sites and apps. The Service Provider sees only totals, such as how many videos were watched. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be asked for your choices first, and you can change them later from Privacy choices in the app's Settings.
The Application contains no analytics software and no crash-reporting software. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers.
ChipTrail's server, database and photo storage run on Cloudflare, which processes this data for us under its own security and privacy commitments. Connections between the Application and the server are encrypted.
Where the Application offers purchases, all payments are processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play. The Service Provider never sees or stores your payment card details, billing address or app store account credentials.
If you email us — for example with Report a change on a dealership page, or to ask for help — we will have whatever you write, and we use it only to answer you and to correct the dealership list.
ChipTrail is a general-audience app for motorcycle riders and collectors. It is not directed to children under 13 years of age (or such higher age as required by applicable law), and the Service Provider does not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us at support@jaysmittlabs.com so that it can be deleted.
You can change any profile line's setting to Private at any time, remove friends, and stop sharing photos. To delete your rider account, open Friends from the Home screen and tap Delete my account at the bottom. That deletes your rider account, friend links, leaderboard entries, sign-in link, backup and backed-up photos from our server at once and for good; the chips on your phone stay. You can also ask us by email at support@jaysmittlabs.com. Data kept only on your phone is deleted by deleting the Application.
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to delete it, the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. The Service Provider does not sell personal information. To exercise your rights, contact support@jaysmittlabs.com.
Cloudflare and Google may process data in countries outside your country of residence, under the safeguards described in their own policies.
Your account key is stored on your phone and only a hashed copy is kept on our server. A backup can be read back only by the rider it belongs to, and a friend's shared profile and photos only by that rider's friends. All connections are encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, and your device's own lock screen remains the main protection for what is on your phone.
If a data breach occurs that affects personal data for which the Service Provider is responsible, we will notify affected users in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
The Service Provider may update this Privacy Policy from time to time and will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy here with a new effective date.
If you have any questions about privacy while using the Application, please contact the Service Provider by email at support@jaysmittlabs.com.
